A department store in Liverpool located at 53-57 Church Street. Founded in 1878, modelled on its famous namesake in Paris. Featured French fashions, perfumes and accessories. Renowned for its sense of style and its encouragement of the arts, and in 1927 a gallery was built in which a series of exhibitions, lectures and concerts were staged. During the 1930s promotional events were a regular feature. Acquired in 1961 by the John Lewis Partnership, who decided to merge it with George Henry Lee. “Mothers with warm-smelling furs were fussing with their school-capped sons into Bon Marche, shopping for school” ('Goya The Obscure' Pg. 277) and Ultramarine Pg. 69. Is this a memory of a childhood outing with his mother Evelyn Lowry?
