Following the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911, the Standard Oil Company of New York, or Socony, was founded, along with 33 other successor companies. In 1920, the company registered the name "Mobiloil" as a trademark.

Lowry refers to the company's wharf in Dairen in his first novel Ultramarine when Dana Hilliot sees the wharf as he enters the port on board
Oedipus Tyrannus; "he could make out the letters on the Standard Oil Company wharf, SOCONY." (Pg 29). This has future echoes of Lowry's references to the Shellburn Refinery at Burrard Inlet in
October Ferry to Gabriola.
