Pearson's Magazine was an influential publication which first appeared in Britain in 1896. It specialised in speculative literature, political discussion, often of a socialist bent, and the arts. Its contributors included Upton Sinclair, George Bernard Shaw, Maxim Gorky, George Griffith, and H. G. Wells, many of whose short stories and novelettes first saw publication in Pearson's. Lowry refers to the Strand in a letter to Carol Brown dated April/May 1926 when he discusses the merits of being published by various magazines; "The Strand, I suppose, Pearsons, and The Grand, and perhaps the London, are all more less first class magazines with second-rate stories..."
