Hotel Pas de Calais, Paris

The Hotel Pas De Calais is located in Saint Germain-des-Pres-Luxembourg (6), Paris, France. The hotel was originally built in 1750 as a home for the writer and philosopher Chateaubriand. The building was transformed into a hotel in 1815. The hotel has been managed by the same family since 1922.

Lowry stayed here in December 1933 with Jan Gabrial before their marriage in Paris. While at the hotel,  Jan Gabrial gave Lowry a gramophone and a set of Red Nichols and Bix Beiderbecke records as a wedding present.( Gordon Bowker Pursued By Furies Pg. 171).

" We consumated our reunion at the Hotel Pas de Calais, joyously rediscovering one another, talking nonstop, and making love. Later we played the gramophone, and spun delicious fantasies." (Jan Gabrial Inside The Volcano Pg. 41).

They stayed at the hotel from 30th December 1933 until 3rd January 1934 before moving to an apartment in the rue Antoine-Chantin.
