Water Street, Liverpool

Originally Bank Street or Bonke Street. It was one of the original seven streets and it was so called because it led to the shore or riverbank. Joe Passalique walks up the street from the river in ‘Goya The Obscure’ (Pg. 276). Water Street was also the location of India Buildings which housed the office of Alfred Holt and Holt Company (the Blue Funnel) Shipping Company. Lowry was a deckhand on one of the Blue Funnel line ships Pyrrhus when he sailed to the Far East in 1927. He may have visited the office to sign on for the voyage.
