Uppingham School

Uppingham School is a co-educational independent school of the English public school tradition, situated in the small town of Uppingham in Rutland, England. The school was founded in 1584 by Robert Johnson, the Archdeacon of Leicester who also established Oakham School.

Lowry refers to the school in Chapter 1 of Ultramarine as Dana Hilliot recalls ; "Left out of the swimming team, the important match against Uppingham. He has stole out of last period to have a look at the notice board." (Pg.25). The memory is probably based an incident during Lowry's time at the Leys School.
