Viking Kalosjer

"Viking Kalosjer" (galoshes) are made by a Norwegian-owned shoe factory. The company was established in 1920 in Askim by Peter Mathias Rowden. Viking Footwear mainly produces shoes and boots in the water-repellent material such as rubber and Gore-Tex.

Lowry refers to a sign for the shoes in his first novel Ultramarine during a sequence with references to his 1931 trip to Norway; Viking Kalosjer verdens beste - Viking Kalosjer verdens beste." (Pg.52).
