Cleveland Street, Birkenhead

A street named after John Cleveland, a Liverpool merchant who once owned the Birkenhead Priory estate. The street runs from Hamilton Square to Corporation Road and was part of Birkenhead's original grid-iron pattern street layout conceived in the 1840's. The street was a mixture of housing and industry with many public houses serving the nearby docks and associated industries.

Lowry refers to the street in his short story 'Goya The Obscure' (Pg. 273).
